N.H. Staffs Prep for the Crush

Dartmouth CollegeThe Richardson H.Q. His staff feverishly prepared for the impending shift to New Hampshire. In the front office, Dave Imamura, a Dartmouth sophomore from Irvington, N.Y., who is heading Richardson efforts at New Hampshire colleges, put together binders detailing his candidate’s packed schedule.

“He is just going to campaign the hell out of this state,” said Mr. Imamura, who has been assigned to pick up Mr. Richardson at 1:20 a.m. from the Manchester airport. “It’s going to be ridiculous, I love Bill Richardson, and this is so much work, but it’s so rewarding.”

History of Camp Stark recounted, Professor Allen Koop

Dartmouth CollegeIn what proved to be a lesson in history dating back to World War II, many from the area heard a real account of New Hampshire's only prisoner of war camp.

The camp's name was Camp Stark, bearing the name of the town it resided in.

Allen Koop, a Dartmouth College professor of American and European history and the author of “Stark Decency,” came before a packed house Wednesday night at the Laconia Public Library to tell the story. More...

Dartmouth graduate Portman joins law firm

nullRob Portman, the former congressman and Bush administration official, is going back to his roots by joining the Cincinnati office of the law firm Squire, Sanders and Dempsey to practice international trade law.

But the Terrace Park Republican is by no means giving up on politics. The law firm has told him he is free to continue traveling Ohio, giving speeches and laying the groundwork for a possible 2010 run for Ohio governor or the U.S. Senate, should George Voinovich decide to retire.

Another sign that Portman is not through with politics is that he has started his own political action committee (PAC) to raise money at the local, state and national level.

Pressure on banks to lead subprime response, Dartmouth Alum Hank Paulson

nullUS policymakers are shifting towards a response to the subprime mortgage crisis that would require greater concessions by investors and financial services companies.

Sheila Bair, chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, said there was gathering political momentum for a more ­radical approach than the investment and home loans industries had so far countenanced.

Dartmouth students plan online debate poll

nullDartmouth College students will provide some immediate feedback about how the Democratic presidential contenders perform in tonight's much-anticipated debate on campus.

More than 450 students have registered to vote in online polls on an independent website, open-vote.com, created by two graduate students.

“Students deserve to have their voice heard, but traditional polling relies on home phones and leaves college students out entirely,” one of the founders, Colin Van Ostern, said in a statement. “It is amazing that with all the new technology and increased internet access in recent years, up until now there still has been no good way to see what a college campus thinks.”

Dartmouth Golf Moves up tp 3rd

Dartmouth CollegeSophomore Sunny Zhang (San Ramon, Calif.) shot a six-over par 78, helping the Big Green women's golf team to move up to third place at the Dartmouth Invitational that concluded Sunday.

Zhang was 10th with a 36-hole score of 158 as the Big Green combined for a total of 656. Harvard was the convincing team victor with 603, and Siena was the runner-up in the 14-school field with 645. More...

Dartmouth President named a “New Englander of the Year”

Dartmouth President James Wright has been chosen a “New Englander of the Year” for 2007 by the New England Council, the council announced today. Wright will share this year's honor with Congressman Barney Frank (D-Mass.) and Peter Meade, Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. More...

Students win Google's Campus 3D contest by building a virtual Dartmouth

Google asked “how would your campus look in 3D” and challenged students to use Google SketchUp and Google Earth software to find out. The Dartmouth group was one of seven winning teams chosen from more than 350 entries. The winners will enjoy a trip to Google's headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., to meet and work with professional 3D modelers. More...

Alumni, faculty help restore Biloxi

Bourque, Office of Planning, Design, and ConstructionNearly two years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, the Tucker Foundation sent another two service trips to Biloxi, Miss., during interim. While Tucker regularly sponsors programs for Dartmouth students to volunteer and participate in hurricane-related relief efforts, this trip marked the first time that a trip comprised of Dartmouth alumni, faculty and staff worked there. Associate Provost and Dean of the Tucker Foundation Stuart Lord, Frederica Ghesquiere ‘04 and Stan Colla ‘66 Tu’86 led that trip, while Raymond Rodriguez ‘09 and Amy Quan ‘09 led the student trip.
