Call him Mr. All-America. Lee Stempniak (West Seneca, N.Y.) was chosen a Division I first team All-America today in an announcement made by JOFA and the American Hockey Coaches Association. Stempniak is the first Big Green player since 1989 to be given All-America status. Dave Williams '90, a second team selection, was Dartmouth's last honoree and Ross Brownridge '80 was the last first-team selection for the Big Green.
“As a team we are proud and pleased that Lee's skills have been recognized,” said head coach Bob Gaudet. “He's a special player and a special student-athlete and this is a wonderful accomplishment for him and for Dartmouth.”
Stempniak finished the season as Dartmouth's leader with 38 points (16g, 22a). He recorded his 100th point on Feb. 21, making him the 30th Big Green player to accomplishment the feat and the first since 1979 to do it in his junior year. Stempniak racked up other accolades during the season. He was chosen first team All-ECAC and All-Ivy along with Academic All-ECAC and All-Ivy. Stempniak was elected captain of the 2004-05 squad and was also presented with the team's Most Valuable Player award. Entering his senior year the 6-0 forward has 108 points.
Stempniak and Yann Danis, a goalie from Brown were the only two ECAC players to be honored.
The JOFA All-America hockey team is sponsored by JOFA, an international leader in hockey equipment, and is chosen by members of the American Hockey Coaches Association.
