Tucker Foundation: “Blankets for Bangladesh is a program started in 2002 in conjunction with the Tucker Foundation's 50 year anniversary. Several Dartmouth students undertook service work in the 2003-2004 academic year with boys at the Charfasson orphanage in Southern Bangladesh (Bhola Island). The orphanage is run by A.H.M. Mainuddin Ahmed (Jahangir) and it is home to 100 young boys. Over its 30 year existence it has provided for 1765 orphans, many of whom have become well-established in local society following their 16-18 year stay at the orphanage. In conjunction with the service work to be done at the orphanage, the Church of Latter-Day Saints community in the Upper Valley decided to create over 100 (roughly 115) blankets to go to the children of the orphanage. Blankets for Bangladesh was thus started.” More...

Dartmouth Partners in Community Service Program Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Posted at 02:53 AM - On Campus

Unique college partnership inspires Dartmouth students to join with Dartmouth alumni and their families in addressing problems facing our society.“If I have had a small fraction of the impact on the children that they have had on me, then I am quite satisfied with what I have accomplished.” This reflection from a DPCS intern demonstrates the transformative impact of a DPCS experience. Another former intern said, “For the first time, I not only interacted with homeless, HIV-positive, and substance-abusing people; I was able to offer them my help.” These special experiences also engage Dartmouth alumni mentors. One alumnus wrote: “Significant differences can be made in people's lives with the simple act of mentoring.” More...

Dartmouth pays tribute to Meleia Willis-Starbuck '07

Posted at 12:20 PM - Students

We grieve the loss of Meleia Willis-Starbuck '07, an inspiring Dartmouth student who devoted much of her life to helping address problems facing our society.  Meleia is truely respected and loved for her engaging, intelligent, passionate and compassionate interactions with everyone she encountered.  She was a person of conviction, reflection and action.  Meleia was living in a University of California, Berkeley, southern campus neighborhood when she was fatally shot in a senseless act of violence at 1:45 a.m. on July 17, 2005. Meleia had returned to Berkeley, her high school hometown to participate in the Dartmouth College, Tucker Foundation's “Dartmouth Partners in Community Services Internship Program.”  She was interning at the “Women's Daytime Drop-In Center” working with women and children to assess and meet their needs for educational, health and housing referrals.

Tucker Foundation and Election Day

Posted at 06:08 PM - Students

Tuesday November 2, 2004 will be a day to remember for many people. It marks the day that changed the lives of all Americans for better or worse - yes it was another presidential election, and an especially close one at that with President Bush declared the final victor. For many Dartmouth students, this was the first presidential election that they were able to vote in. Some voted in their home states, but many were encouraged to vote in New Hampshire, where their vote was significant in deciding who the state went to. Various campus groups started Sunday to get students motivated to vote by sliding flyers under dorm rooms, standing on streets with posters, and asking passersby if they had registered. Overall voting numbers increased nationwide from 105 million in the 2000 election to 112 million in this election. More...

It is true that there is tremendous danger. People are without homes, food and medicines. Tucker Murphy, a 2004 Dartmouth graduate, has been awarded a Rhodes Scholarship for Bermuda. He hopes to study for a master of science degree in integrative bioscience at Oxford University in England.
Murphy grew up snorkeling and collecting shells in Bermuda, and this, he says, focused his interests in evolutionary biology. While working on another island - Tierra del Fuego - between high school and college, he read Darwin's journals and explored beaches that contained artifacts of the Fuegian Indians. He arrived at Dartmouth committed to studying biology and anthropology. “I was lucky at Dartmouth to encounter a number of passionate professors and coaches who encouraged independence” Murphy said. “They presented education and athletics as much more than just the pursuit of a grade or a race result, and as a chance to force the limits of your imagination and your will. I'm happy for the opportunity the Rhodes will allow me to continue this effort.” More...
